OK, so it’s 2014! The age of enlightenment, gay rights have almost equaled the rights of the heterosexual, we now have apps like Grindr and Gaydar that let us connect and have anonymous sex with guys in our area. But what went on before we had these wonderful technological advantages? The hanky code!
What is the hanky code? Basically it was a simple matter of placing a hanky in your pocket. Left would mean that you were dominant and right would mean you were passive, wearing a hanky around your neck would mean you went both ways. The code first appeared in San Francisco in the 70’s, each colour would denote a certain sexual preference and was worn when in bars or cruising outdoors. Red for fisting, blue for fucking, black for S&M and so on, if you wore it in your left pocket you were the one who wanted to do the giving, if you wore it in your right, you wanted to be the one who wanted to do the taking! A system that was so simple and easy to understand.
In some ways I miss it. We now live in the age of the Internet, the age of communication, so to speak. One would think that cluing your partner into your personal fetishes would be so much easier! Fact is, guys spend even more time in bars, trying to work out who is up for it and what is he in to! Perhaps there are some thing’s that cannot be replaced by an app or Gaydar!
There is certainly a place for romance and love, but until that happens, a man just wants to have some consensual fun. Wouldn’t we save a lot of time and frustration if more people still knew the hanky code?
